Lucinda Brant's sweeping family sagas are a perfect reminder of why I fell in love with historical romance —Cheryl Bolen, New York Times bestselling author

Roxton Family Saga Julian and Deb’s Happily Ever After.

1760s England and France Based on real events, a hasty midnight marriage establishes a dynasty.

Just twelve years old, and drugged with laudanum to make her compliant, Deborah Cavendish is woken in the middle of the night and married off to a distraught boy not much older than herself.

Years later, Deb stumbles across a wounded duelist in the forest, and it is love at first sight. Deb has no idea the wounded duelist is in truth her noble husband Julian Hesham, Marquess of Alston, returned to England after years in exile to claim his wife.

Remaining incognito, Julian is determined Deb will fall in love with him, not his title, and sets out to woo her before she can be seduced by a persistent suitor with ulterior motives. Their marriage, and the future of the Roxton dukedom depend upon it.

The energy starts on page one and never lets up. Twists and turns, dramatic revelations, and some enjoyable chaos make this a book that keeps the reader turning pages. Highly recommended! — Fiona Ingram, Readers’ Favorite 5 STAR Medal Winner

Lucinda Brant fully immerses the reader in the world of Georgian England, keeping you turning pages, or listening late into the night as the case may be. For those historical romance fans who have been gobsmacked by Nicholas Boulton (as a narrator), I am thrilled to report that Alex Wyndham is every bit as good. His narrative voice is deep and lovely. I unreservedly recommend that you listen to MIDNIGHT MARRIAGE.”—Lady Wesley, Romantic Historical Reviews audiobook review

The whole book is rather pointless. Far better to have had them have to acknowledge the marriage before the young wife could become an inadvertent bigamist. The wife often went to live in the husband's home where she was taught her duties as his wife. It is unlikely that no one in the family knew she was married . They had to know so they wouldn't be marrying her off to another. His family would want her trained to fulfill her position.. If the story was like a marriage of convenience story where they had to get along and learn to love each other it might have been better.
There is no tension because she can't marry any one else.

Midnight Marriage A Georgian Historical Romance Roxton Family Saga Book 1 edition by Lucinda Brant Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

In 1761, in the dead of night, in Gloucestershire, England, twelve years old, Deborah is pulled from bed by her nurse and spirited to her older brother, Sir Gerald Cavendish’s library, to meet two old strangers. In her drug induced confusion, she is completely at a loss as to why she was being introduced to these two, apparently lecherous men. Her brother and the two men discussed her as if she wasn’t even there. She gleans talk of marriage but she couldn’t imagine that it had anything to do with her. After all, she had just celebrated her twelfth birthday and her time for coming out was still years away. Her rushed marriage to another stranger, Julian Hesham, was performed that very night and she was allowed, once again to bed; completely forgetting everything that had transpired.
Eight years later, in 1769, while Deborah was practicing with her viola with her younger cousin, Jack, she came across an injured stranger in a nearby forested glen. The man had a profusely bleeding stab wound in his side. Upon discovery, Deborah immediately set about to save his life.

This is a regency romance with more than just a few twists. The author introduces a multitude of characters with a nefariously shady interest in Deborah’s fortunes and future. Dates and historical facts are correct and reasonably researched; adding a little more reality to a work of fiction. I’ve always had a special affinity with fiery-spirited redheads and Deborah Cavendish certainly fills that bill. As a longtime sapiosexual, she ticks all my boxes for the ideal heroine. Her courage, tenacity, and questioning nature endear her to me. On the other hand, Julian Hesham admirably succeeds in playing her perfect hero; tall, strong, rich, and mysterious. Lucinda Brant’s style follows the well-established formula employed by authors such as Georgette Heyer and Barbara Cartland. The fires of passion are a little too tame for my tastes but there is enough meat on the literary bone to leave me sufficiently sated.
I love a good romance novel. This is not one. And I read the whole thing. After the first few pages I was wondering where this was going to go. There were so many things that made no sense, (Why is she wearing a man's shirt and petticoats while playing the viola in the woods? Where's her skirt? If she needs a man's shirt, why not breeches and boots?) The dialogue was lacking and there was none of the wonderful first meeting followed by the building of tension between the characters as their attraction increases. She straddled the man and he was in love. Ok, so that would make sense if the book was written by a man, but that wouldn't be in the historical romance genre. Then they kissed once, out where people could see them and she wasn't ruined? And then they got married? Has this author ever read a period romance novel before? About 1/2 way into the book I started to get interested, but it only lasted about 10 pages and it was back to drivel and actions the story line did not support. (How could the duke be throwing a welcoming party for his son's bride the night they first meet her when they didn't know she was coming? That's some wicked party planning. And why was she back in bed with him the day after she said nothing could induce her to resume relations? Please, give me something interesting to read!) I don't like to criticize, but this book was so bad I couldn't, in all good conscience, encourage anyone else to read it.
I spent nearly the whole book angry at the characters for their complete lack of communication. While Julian's original intentions for his early deception made sense and could be justified. They were forcibly wed as children while Deb was sick and drugged with cold medicine before Julian is banished and Deb went back to bed thinking it was a weird fever dream. When he returned, he wanted to see if he could have a relationship with his bride on his own merit. No knowledge of Julian's wealth and title, no knowledge that they were already married. He wanted to see if they would actually like each other and have a marriage of love rather then being arranged. It was a good premise and when Deb marries him voluntarily as an adult thinking she eloped, it should have all been fine. Nearly all of the later conflict came from Julian being a little s*** who never explains anything and just assumes he should be trusted anyway and Deb keeps forgiving him.
Julian repeatedly behaves in a boorish and rude fashion, quickly becoming a nightmare of a husband who just expects Deb to blindly trust him anyway even when he repeatedly lies to her either outright or by omission. But hey, the sex is nice so of course Deb dutifully goes along with it even her life is put in danger multiple times.
In terms of well written, yes, at times. The dialog is annoying, but engaging, the clothing descriptions border of costume porn [even if they don't always make sense], the fights are well choreographed so you can follow the action, and the author clearly put a lot of thought into the family relationships...but the characters will make you want to pull out your hair. Hopefully you won't be inspired to throw your kindle like I was.
