Getting It Through My Thick Skull (Audible Audio Edition) Mary Jo Buttafuoco, Audible Studios Books Reviews
I purchased this book quite a while ago. Finally having time to read it, I am pleasantly surprised at how much she has grown. The fact that she narrates the book herself makes it an even better book. As funny as it sounds, I recommend reading this with professional narration. It made it even better for me to understand from her point of view.
After reading this touching story about Mary Jo and all her trials and tribulations with her ex-husband, Joey. Here she gives you the true story of what it was like to be married to a philandering, gambling and totally unreliable man. She tells the story of how much she loved Joey and of all the stupid things he did which untimately led her to suffer total facial paralysis at his hands. Thank goodness she has come out the other side a very loving, giving, much smarter woman. I am so happy that she has found happiness with a real man who adores her and she him. She did adore Joey and stayed married to him for 20 years, so no one can call her a quitter. His way of showing love was to do so many stupid things. I am glad that Mary Jo is a much stronger, wonderful woman. The book is a quick read, but thoroughly enjoyable.
I've always been interested in this story but wondered what I'd think about it after having read the book. Many times, cases like this are sensationalized and the books tend to focus on just what they want to. I was pleasantly surprised that the author gave a very honest view of everything she went through in this horrific sharing of her life, however, she also gave very realistic views of everyone else - including ex-husband Joey Buttafuoco, who was the reason behind all her problems, as well as Amy Fischer who shot her. Mary Jo was and is very kind-hearted and gave everyone the benefit of every possible doubt. Rebuilding her life wasn't easy. She obviously was in much denial for a long time, supporting her husband, Joey, as a good wife would. It took years for Mary Jo to realize what a sociopath could do, and did do, to her life. But she was blessed with true love in the end and while reading this book, I was drawn to a deeper understanding of her life and why she actually did stay with Joey as long as she did. Mary Jo was and is a brave woman; she's also a good woman who plays life by the rules, for which she paid the price. But - she didn't lose in the end. Goodness pays off and she's with an honest and supportive man now, she raised two wonderful kids and at last, the reader is led to believe that she finally let go of all the bad and can now enjoy the rest of her life. As a reader, I was able to really understand and empathize with Mary Jo - she writes everything from the heart - the good and the bad - which is really what life is. She doesn't gloss over anything. And she never bad-mouths anyone despite the fact that she really could have had every reason to do so. She's a good woman who had a most terrible thing happen to her, but it's that terrible thing and the long journey of getting up from underneath it, that resulted in her triumph of becoming the strong, successful woman she is now. I highly recommend this book.
I always wanted to shake Mary Jo when she defended the piece of excrement she was married to. Maybe it was for the sake of the kids. But why give your daughter the message that Dad can have an underage girlfriend, and it's okay? She had to be blind or stubborn or both.
Well, it's good to see that she was able to get on with her life, while Amy and Joey lost all semblance of respectability.
Thank you, Mary Jo, for your honesty. I too lived with a sociopath and finally got it through my head who/what I was dealing with and got out. I stayed way too long. Don't be fooled, they don't change. Sad news, but the sooner your internalize it the better. If I'd stayed, I would have died.
I always did wonder why she stayed with that idiot! I kept up with this story from Day 1! Mary Jo answered every question I had in this book!
I thought her book was well written & a real page turner! I never wanted to put it down! Totally enjoyed it! But honestly, I always thought that she was stronger in real life than she actually was!
I am so happy she wrote this & shared her story with the rest of us! I wish her a long happy life—sans Joey!!!
This book is enlightening for anyone who remembers the nasty headlines about the Buttafuoco saga. I always thought Joey was behind the attempted murder, but now I know differently.
Congrats to Mary Jo for being such a strong and courageous survivor. Your book will no doubt inspire anyone living in similar circumstances.
I had a big brother who was much like Joey. A big talker who had trouble with the law, and was always scheming some way or another. Sadly he ruined his health through drug addiction.
This book is a great read for anyone who remembers Mary Jo's story. I had always thought Joey put Amy up to her actions, now I have a better understanding of what really happened.
Mary Jo is a very strong and determined individual. Congratulations for telling your truth May Jo, you and your children deserve all the happiness in the world.
If you are contemplating the purchase of this book, please buy it - it is NOT tabloid in any sense of the word. It is a true lesson in life; one woman's tale of what it is like to be married to a man who is manipulative, blames the world for his own transgressions, and and leaves a path of destruction in his wake by his manipulation and convincing behavior that causes one to doubt oneself.
Mary Jo Buttafuoco is to be commended for writing this book and for being so brutally frank and honest as to why she stayed in this marriage, it's effects on her children and her own shortcomings as well. Kudos also to her co-writer, Julia McCarron, who weaves cohesion to this tale and gives us an exacting timeframe of the events in the lives of the Buttafuoco family.
Any one of us, can be married to or have a partner who is a sociopath, and there is no cure except to run. Mary Jo does not ask for sympathy in this book, nor to drum up animosity for Joey or Amy; but rather, she chooses to relate a life story, with life lessons for us all. Please read this book, I highly recommend it, as it could happen to anybody - male or female.
